So Long Teen VOGUE

Decade in Review: 2005, 2004
Above: Alber Elbaz waves farewell with a broken wrist
Skirting round the fact that I was fourteen & had not yet graduated from Teen VOGUE...

I will recount a story read once upon a time in the Style.com archives. "Once upon a time" being this past October when, prompted by my darling dearie Aletheia Weiyi Chay's fascination with Alber Elbaz, I decided to brush up on the history of fashion house Lanvin. Among the digital stacks I found a far-flung anecdotal gem, the backstory of Lanvin's Spring '06 collection shown at Paris fall '05's fashion week. Elbaz, master of chic & of our hearts, had suffered a broken wrist. (I never could discover how). So handicapped, sketching was rendered impossible. In order to communicate his vision to the design team, the designer had to make very wide gestures with his arms. There he had it! Elbaz found in his flailing arms the inspiration needed to create the decade's most gracefully full clothing. The pieces from this collection are of historically voluminous proportions.

Elbaz used Querelle Jansen!

Model Querelle Jansen was as much an epiphany for me in '04 as she was for Marc Jacobs. I realized that inspiration is more often strung along between individuals than self-activated by an artist & the impact of acting as a muse when I read of how her makeup, eye-lining extended past her lids, was used as a prototype for all Louis Vuitton models showing the Spring '05 collection. Thank you Teen VOGUE reading sessions for staying in my memory! It was educational & fun!
