Top item on my Christmas wish list: a tankishly beautiful sort of men's watch that I imagine on the dainty wrist of Esme, one of Salinger's most memorable characters. Though my holiday wish will most likely not come true, I decided to gift myself the satisfaction of ogling some oversized and, in my case, overpriced specimens which fit the bill Salinger lays out in his short story, "a military-looking one that looked rather like a navigator's chronograph. Its face was much too large for her slender wrist."
